So, will you make money when you sell on eBay? Ah, that is a great question and I'm thinking maybe I should use it as a title for a book and sell it on eBay! Bet it would be a big seller, too.

Well, to start to answer the question, I'll say, "It all depends". Depends on what? Depends on what things you're selling on eBay. You know, there are all types of sellers on eBay.

Some people sell new items that are drop shipped to their buyers. They, the seller, never see the original product before it ships. The items are shipped directly from the dealer or manufacturer to the buyer with the seller acting as the middleman.

There are also other people selling new brand name products on eBay. The only ones I'm actually familiar with are those in the cosmetics category. But, I would assume they're making money or they wouldn't continue to sell.

Then there are the people who just want to sell some of the stuff they've had around the house for years and figure eBay may be good way to get back some of the purchase price. Unless they're selling a gift or something they got for free these types of sales probably won't be profitable.

Ok, now we'll get into the area I know something about - buying used and new items from thrift stores, estate sales and garage sales to resell on eBay. This can be a profitable category in which to sell. Oh, I forgot to include Craig's List. This is a great source, too.

Now when you deal in these type items your profit is made up front, when you buy. Because unlike the drop shipper who already knows what price his products will sell for, we, the re-seller, only have an educated and sometimes it's an uneducated guess.

In this case you need to have a set auction starting price for everything you buy. The easiest way to do this is to start everything at or above the same price every time.

For example, suppose I use $10.99 as my rock bottom auction price. Every time I see something I'm interested in, I ask myself, "Will this sell for at least 10.99"? If the answer is yes then it's a done deal.

Now, I know from experience that the listing, selling and PayPal fees run around 20% of the final sale price. So in order to make money on this item I need to buy it for $2 or less - preferably less than $1.00. See why I say our profit is made when we buy?

Now, to answer the question, will you make money when you sell your things on eBay - I still say, it all depends!
