Will Teeth Whitening Be Enough?

Many people get their teeth whitened, hoping that a quick cosmetic touch will be enough to sort out their dental situation. But is teeth whitening enough or should we be looking at other treatments as well?

To answer this question, it's important to ask exactly what teeth whitening does. Teeth whitening - in most cases - is a process of bleaching the teeth, in an attempt to restore its original colour. This means that even though your teeth can look considerably healthier, this is only cosmetic, and may not in fact reflect the true state of your dental hygiene.

Whitening your teeth doesn't get rid of plaque or cure problems like bleeding gums. If you are experiencing any dental problems that you would like looked at, then it's important to visit your dentist for a checkup.

There's little point in having bright, white, shiny teeth if you only are going to have to need to have them taken out in a few weeks.

Having a cosmetic whitening treatment performed on your teeth is also not an excuse to ignore your dental hygiene going forward. Teeth whitening is only a temporary solution, and as most people find, will begin to lose its affect after several months to a year.

Most teeth whitening companies suggest visiting them every year or two, or using a home whitening kit following the treatment to ensure your teeth keep their white look.

So, unfortunately for those looking for any easy way out of flossing and brushing, dental hygiene is still key and something you need to keep on top of.

In order to keep on top of your teeth's health, it's also important to pay constant attention to your diet. The food you eat - and don't - is particularly important in making sure that your teeth maintain that bright, white colour you've managed to get from cosmetic whitening.

It's important to keep away from drinks like tea and coffee, both of which have the power to damage your teeth and stain the surface. Fizzy drinks and sweets also have the opportunity to inflict damage on your teeth, so it's important to stay away from these products where possible.

Of course keeping your teeth white isn't just about keeping away from certain foods, it's also about eating other types of foods. Strawberries for example are an old remedy for teeth whitening and something that can help to keep your teeth clean and healthy.

So is teeth whitening enough? It's a good start, but on its own it shouldn't replace any other standard teeth cleaning practices.
