Cotton T-shirts are once again making a huge impact on the fashion industry. Music stars, movies stars and sports celebrities are all wearing T-shirts and they are wearing in them in more places. T-shirts are being seen everywhere from music videos to Hollywood Boulevard. And the best part is that t-shirts made of cotton are not only soft and comfortable, they are also all natural and environmentally friendly.
Cotton is one of the very few products that has virtually not changed in thousands of years. The process by which we get cotton has changed radically through the centuries but the actual fibre and product has not.
Cotton has been around since pre-historic times. It has been harvested and spun into fabric for more than 7 000 years. Fabrics made of spun cotton have shown up on virtually every continent and it many ancient cultures. Egypt, Peru, China, India and the Natives of North America all had versions of cotton fabrics. By the 1500's almost the entire known world had their own methods of making cotton clothing.
The scientific name for the cotton plant is gossypium. There are about 39 to 40 known geneses in this family including the plants that are grown for commercial use. The gossypium plant is a shrub which produces a boll, or wad of cottony fibres. It is these fibres which are carefully removed from the plants at harvest time.
Once the bolls have been gathered the fibres have to be spun and twisted into yarn. This was all done by hand until the industrial revolution which began in Britain in the early 1700's. The very first machine used in the production of cotton was invented by Lewis Paul and John Wyatt of Birmingham, England in 1738. This machine was called the Roller Spinning Machine.
In 1764 the spinning jenny was invented by James Hargreaves. This invention allowed production of cotton to be spun at almost eight times the speed of a single person. The next major step in the development of the cotton industry was the Cotton gin which was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793.
Since the 1800's cotton fabrics have been challenged by synthetic materials and other fabrics which are natural but have to go through extensive manufacturing processes. To help cotton compete the cotton industry came up with new marketing strategies and promotions. Since the early 1990's the cotton industry has made huge strides and is once again a leading all natural product in the clothing world.
One of the most popular products made from this wonderful, versatile fabric is the t-shirt. When you go to buy that new t-shirt be sure that you check the label and make certain that it reads, cotton.
