Humans have lived on this earth for centuries and they need energy to do more things as civilization has become more modernized. Businesses, industry and peoples lifestyles consume high amounts of energy while at the same time, the emissions from the energy providers of unrenewable energy, pollutes the world. In the mean time, the world’s population keeps on increasing. The United Nations predicts that by 2050 the world population is going to reaches 9 Billion; all dependant on energy usage in every aspect of their lives. Currently the main sources of energy that we depend on are oil, and coal which is not renewable, so someday it is going to cease and if we don’t start doing something about it our future generation is really going to suffer.
The international scientific community promotes the importance of how energy efficiency measures will help in minimizing climate change impacts, associated with rising atmospheric Carbon Dioxide levels. The International Energy Association, through the World Energy Outlook 2010 Report, highlighted that Energy Efficiency strategies will make up 53% of all global efforts in restricting Carbon Dioxide emissions to an acceptable level.

Western Australian electricity tariff charges have also risen significantly over the last 2 years, with a 43% increase in residential tariff charges and over a 30% increase in business tariff charges. Based on potential tariff price rises that have been recommended by the Office of Energy; it is anticipated that a further 40% electricity tariff price increase will occur over the next two years.

So simply stated; to be Energy Efficient is to use less energy to perform the same task. We all improved our energy efficiency in the lighting of our homes when the Federal Government introduced the ban on selling incandescent globes. Before this ban; most homes used standard 40 – 75 Watt incandescent light globes, now the same rooms are being lit by 18 Watt Fluorescent light globes. In some instances; that is over a 75% reduction in energy use to perform the same lighting task.

Energy efficiency is as important as sourcing your power from a renewable energy source. By first using less energy to perform the same task and then seeking to install renewable energy generation like solar power; you will be doing your bit to combat the challenges of global warming, and reducing the financial impact associated rising electricity costs and also for a better life of our future generation.
