After 200 miles coast to coast, it came as a delightful eye-opener to finally arrive at the historic port of Whitby in North Yorkshire.
A group of riders were blown away by the enchanting small town and the cosmopolitan modernity dwelling side by side in this, the Jewel of Yorkshire. Passing through Lakes, Dales and Moors we passed through some wonderful countryside, taking in three National Parks along the way, we witnessed some incredible natural sites.
Drawing inspiration from the scenery, we raced on into Whitby on the third day of our North Yorkshire expedition. When we finaly reached the finish line - the Whitby coast - we were in need of some refreshment. And the Shambles was a great place to capture our thoughts and brag about our cycling skills. Just as promised on the gruelling days ride we got stuck into some fine real Yorkshire ale, a fine selection of India Pale Ale, stout and moonshine, a truly impressive and inviting prospect. We wasted no time in order in a round of the local brew and before long the beer was flowing and the tales growing taller, good times and banter aplenty. After a few hours of drinking, talking and joking it was tea time.
We were cetainly hungry and the famous port was clearly a town to furfill our hunger, offering up some of the best fish and chips available in the United Kingdom. Yet its not all fish and chips, with European eateries lining the streets all through the town had there appeal, it would have been a shame not to try a traditional english dish. We had a kings feast of deep fried cod and chips as many people, locals, tourists and jolly sailors alike, had done before our time.
Visitors to Whitby always leave feeling they have been in a special town, and we were no different. Traditional appearance mixes with contemporary style, with many restaurants and bars lining the streets. It is not hard to see why Whitby has been voted the best seaside resort in the UK. Whitby today is a busy tourist town, and for me, stands out as Britains best coastal resort.
Whitby in a remarkable feat has managed to combine the old with the new seamlessly to keep the old guard happy in familiar surroundings whilst attracting a new generation of visitors for the future. Whitby knows how to celebrate its past and present, with a range of shows that are the envy of many a UK town, Whitby appeals to a wide range of people.
We were moved by the way that Whitby delivered a quintessentially English seaside experience in a modern and youthful way. I cannot wait to get back. And this time ill try not to forget my camera. And so we were away. After one brief but brilliant night in Whitby we were on our travels again heading for the delights of Robin Hoods bay and the contemplation of the journey home.
