There's certainly a wealth of evidence, much of it convincing, concerning the various health benefits of taking fish oil. But, how can you really tell the difference between what's available?

With the recent increase in people taking fish oil supplements and the range on offer it's often a case of sorting out the wheat from the chaff, as to which brand you choose. We seem to be spending more and more money on them every year as the health message reaches more of us. The main beneficiaries we're told are those people who suffer from some of the most serious of modern day diseases. These include some forms of cancer, heart disease and brain disorders.

These are important illnesses that modern medicine is continually looking at new ways of treating and preventing. Modern researchers are beginning to see fish oil supplements as a positive influence in many ways, but are worried at the poor quality of some. This could mean many of you are wasting your money, as price is not always a good guide.

It helps if we had a few pointers to help us make the right decisions. Well, here's what you need to look out for when comparing brands. The two most important forms of omega 3 that should be present are known are known as EPA and DHA in their abbreviated form. I was surprised at how some brands have little to none of these two.

The next step you can take is to look at the quality of the fish oil supplement as this also varies widely. Some consumer surveys have found some of the lowest levels of EPA and DHA in some of the most expensive capsules. The amounts present varied between 250mg to 600 mg per pill. While some doubt still exists as to the correct amounts your body should receive, some suggest around 500-600 mg per day of EPA and DHA.

There's a lot more reading on this subject on my main site where I share my findings on what else influences the quality of fish oil supplements and where to get the most for your hard earned dollars.

Peter Foremski is an avid researcher into the benefits of taking fish oils. On his fish oils site he shares that information freely on how to find the most effective brands to keep you healthy, fitter and living a fuller life.
