Wedding insurance is not just there for when you need it - it's there because you will need it. The truth is that rarely does a wedding pass without event, without problem and without last minute panics and changes of plan. Of course, most weddings involve a degree of panic, but this is to be expected perhaps when such a life changing decision is being affirmed. But there are types of panic which you can well do without, and it is often these which can cause worry, inconvenience and expense.
Take, for example, the hired outfits. These are so often damaged, stained, soiled or otherwise damaged in some way that deposits may well be lost. When you consider the amount of food, drink and frivolity taking place, whilst wearing ludicrously flamboyant outfits with tails, veils and other dangly bits we're not accustomed to wearing, it is a surprise when hired outfits are returned looking in anything like the same condition they were to begin with. This can prove expensive, and if your deposit is £100, would it not make more sense to pay £30 wedding insurance and cover any such potential expense?
Another worry for most brides and grooms is the weather. Depending upon where you live, the weather may be anything from unpredictable to bizarre, and regardless of the time of year in which you are getting married, you can never entirely depend upon conditions. IF your venue has been chosen primarily for the landscaped gardens or outside views which will be perfect for your wedding photos, then it may well be upsetting if, on the day, it rains so hard that the bride's dress is covered in mud, the groom slips and becomes caked and the caterer slips and drops the cake. Weather can cause all sorts of problems and hazards, and whilst insurers can't alter, predict or guarantee the weather, should things go wrong on the day, they may well be there to help pick up the pieces.
Closely associated with weather conditions and requirements are of course the photographs. Increasingly these days photographers are using digital cameras. This can provide both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand it is possible to actually preview photographs immediately they are taken, thereby making sure that the pictures have come out well. However, whereas physical negatives and prints are tangible objects which can be looked after, digital pictures are merely files on a computer, and computers have a tendency to misbehave from time to time. A faulty hard drive, a virus infection of a simply accidental click of the delete button and all your wedding photos could vanish before you've even seen them.
The photographer may well be insured, but for total peace of mind it may be as well to take out insurance for your wedding so that whatever problems might cause your wedding photos to be less than you'd hoped, damaged, missing or incomplete, at least your costs can be recovered, allowing you in part to cover the expense of staging special portraits later on.
When you take a moment to consider the huge number of people, services, items, outfits and gifts involved in bringing even a standard wedding together, it does seem to be something of a miracle that so many go without too much going wrong. Of course, in many cases the little problems or inconveniences don't make too much difference, and often end up becoming humorous anecdotes. Many of us have heard couples describing funny things that happened at their wedding, and this is to be expected. But at the same time, it also demonstrates clearly that things do go wrong, very often.
It's just a case of whether the problems will prove serious, or expensive. Knowing how you would manage if facing a £100 bill for a damaged outfit may take you a moment of serious thought. But even more serious is contemplating how you'd manage if one of your guests tripped over the bride's train and sued you for damages. Sadly, this is not unheard of, and there are many such instances of personal liability claims which can be very expensive. Although not all wedding insurance packages cover personal liability, or the liability of your guests, many do, and it is worth comparing wedding insurance policies to make sure that those aspects you feel most particularly relevant in your case are fully covered.
