When to Clean Your Pond Filter

Even though your pond filter is responsible for keeping your pond water clean, you don't want to clean this device as often as you might think.

In fact, you want to avoid cleaning your pond filter as much as possible. Pond filter media actually get better at their job the longer they do it. The bacteria in the media become more effective over time, so it's beneficial to have pond filter media that's several seasons old.

However, there are certain times when your pond filter needs to be cleaned in order to continue functioning properly. If algae, leaves or other detritus is physically clogging the filter, it's time to clean it.

The most important thing to remember when cleaning out your pond filter is not to use any kind of harsh cleaning agent. Although it sounds a little strange, it's actually best to clean it out using water that's currently in your pond. That's because over time your pond has built up a supply of beneficial bacteria, and using any chlorine or other cleaning chemical would kill this supply once you placed the pond filter back in the water.

When cleaning your pond filter you want to take the following steps:

* Remove the filter media. Clean out both the filter itself and the individual media. Clean the media until the water runs clear.
* Swap out any media pieces that are damaged or misshapen.
* Move water through the inlets and outlets of the filter to make sure they're working properly. Use a brush or some forceful water to get rid of any algae or other detritus that may be clogging the holes.
* Put the filter back together and place it back in your pond. Monitor it to make sure your pond water is moving through it and that it is functioning properly. Use a water quality test kit a few days after you've reinstalled the filter to make sure it is maintaining high water quality.

Although you don't want to clean your pond filter very often, you want to make sure you do it thoroughly once it becomes necessary. A clean filter is synonymous with a clean pond, so taking care of your pond filter is an important step in promoting overall pond health.
