To most people, hemorrhoids are something to make a joke about with your friends. And while it's true that a problem with hemorrhoids might not be the worst thing that could happen to a person, it can cause itching, anal bleeding and in some more extreme cases a great deal of pain and discomfort.

If you do have itching, discomfort when using the bathroom, blood on the toilet paper or in the fecal material or any pain in the anal area, you may potentially have hemroids, but a medical exam is necessary to rule out any potentially more dangerous conditions. Your doctor will look at the anal cavity and then conduct a more thorough exam, either a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy. If you're required to get the total colon examined then you need a colonoscopy, but occasionally a simoidoscopy can be done instead. This procedure is a little easier because it is only looking at the very end of the colon.

Since a colon exam is not anyone's idea of a good time, it is good to note that they are done everyday with reliable results. Once you get a little older, they become necessary anyway. If your family has a history of colon disease you need to get examined at age forty, everyone else can wait another ten years. Every five to ten years, you will need a new colonoscopy even if your initial results were good. You would think that having your colon examined would be the hardest thing, but really it's the laxative that is worse. The anal cavity is cleaned out with the help of a prescription laxative. You will want to take the day off work as this bowel cleaning process is not pretty. The laxative is the most disgusting part of this process, when you're being examined you are given drugs to relax and control discomfort.

The reason a visit to the doctor is recommended is to rule out the other more serious medical conditions that have similar symptoms to hemorrhoids. These can include colon cancer, polyps, rectal cancer, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis which are inflammatory bowel diseases. Anal infections and anal tears can be additional disorders that can cause patients trouble. These medical problems are potentially more serious then hemroids but can have the same symptoms so they need to be ruled out.

Since hemroid problem are much more common than the other medical conditions, it is more likely than not that your diagnosis will be hemorrhoids, but a doctor's visit is necessary. You deserve to have good colon health, so see to it with one simple doctor's visit.
