The best aspect behind grape growing is they grow on a vine, with help from a trellis. Since vines can't support themselves, the trellis gives them a place to hold on to ; maximizing space usage.
Because of this, grapevine growers can harvest grapes both in a vineyard, and in their own backyards.
Trellis Aesthetics
Trellises come in numerous different of looks, styles - varying according to vineyard size and the grower's personal preference. They can be either purchased (recommended for small-sized vineyards/yards) or homemade - an option more acceptable for vineyards of substantial sizes that would force larger trellis constructions.
Trellis materials can consist of anything from PVC pipes, to pre-treated wood, iron, aluminum or stainless steel.
Trellis Location
Before you head out to get a trellis for your grapevines, ensure you have determined its location previously. This way you can make the mandatory measurements to order a trellis that fits well in it's destination. Remember that, even though , grapevines maximise space by growing on a trellis, they still require a space of 8ft by 8ft for one single vine.
The trellis should always be built before the grapevine is planted. Typically , a shorter trellis is better to endure chillier weathers, while higher trellises maximise daylight exposure in warm climates.
Trellis Installation
Posts must be a median of two ft into the ground. You may either secure them in place using sand and cement, or you can tie them down to the ground using catch wires, Posts are set at a distance of 8ft apart, with 2 rows of galvanized steel running between the poles. One runs along the apex of the posts, and one along the bottom, securing them together. You may use a staple gun to staple the wires in effect.
When your grapevine begins to grow, it will climb along these 2 wires on the trellis. At the start, the vine will need your assistance to grow onto the right places - an aspect that we will later discuss on my grape pruning section.
