What it Takes to Become a Dog Trainer

If you are anything like me, you love dogs. You can't imagine yourself being without your dog nearby. Well, how about making a living working with dogs? As a dog trainer you could spend day after day working with dogs. Would you like this? Of course you would, who wouldn't? Here's few tips to get you started to become dog trainer.

Before anything else, you should ask yourself this question and answer it honestly: Why do I want to become dog trainer?

I am sure your first answer is because you love dogs and you would love to work with them. If this is your only answer, I am sorry, it is not good enough. Also, if your answer was something like "I want to make a lot of money", you should think again about becoming dog trainer. Maybe you heard how dog trainers are getting nice pay check every month. Do you really think money is the right way to go about this?

Money is not the right reason to become dog trainer, passion and love are. Don't go down this path for the wrong reasons, you'll just get disappointed. I recommend you to attend at least two dozen 1-4 day seminars and workshops on a variety of dog related subjects, such as:


* history and development of dog breeds
* house training and crate training
* pet dog and puppy training
* obedience training
* dog behavior, it's modification and problem solving techniques
* handling and training aggressive dogs

This are just a few to get you started. Try to find what really interest you in dogs. Think of it like charity - would you do it it nobody would pay you to? If you answer is yes, then I suggest you follow your heart. Bottom line is you should do what your are passionate about. And be really honest with yourself, dogs can sense if you're not in it 100%.

Working with dogs means working with their owners too. The truth is, as a dog trainer, you will mostly work with people, not with dogs. Are you enjoy working with people, training them to become good dog owners? Sometimes you will need lot of patience and nerves of steel to get trough. Are you comfortable with telling people about their mistakes and be a good coach to people as well as to your dogs?


Number one thing for you to become dog trainer should be to educate yourself about dogs and dog training as much as possible. Attend seminars, watch dog DVD training movies or volunteer at your local shelter. Nothing beats hands-on experience. Plus, you will get experience dealing with different dog breeds and dog tempers.

Remember, becoming dog trainer will take time, money and patience. It's not easy, but it's not that hard. As a dog trainer you will have influence on lives of people and their dogs. It's a responsibility and if you do it right, you will have a great deal of fun AND highly rewarding job.
