Everybody is unique. Perhaps it our charisma, knowledge, life experiences, sex appeal, expertise in certain areas or maybe our humor that makes us different from each other. Whatever it maybe, it is a very personal thing. Imagine the difficulty in giving a speech which needs to appeal to all this people in the room and all at the same time.
Bearing that in mind. Take a look at a typical guest list in a wedding these days. One word comes to mind, Diversity. For starter, the age range will be extremely broad. You have everyone from children to working colleagues, teenagers to grand parent being present. Throw in the mix of friends and families from a variety of different background and cultures, you get an audience most unlike that of any situation.
Other than a few blood ties and knowing the bride and groom. There are very little things that guest at a wedding reception have in common. Beside the few people you need to thank in your speech, you want the content of your speech to connect with as many people as possible. This make writing and delivering your speech more challenging.
The vast majority of us has never spoken in front of a group before either socially or at work. Therefore the idea of making a speech to an audience has the potential to paralyze them with fear. Some people cannot relax and enjoy the wedding reception until the speech they are making is out of the way. A lot of people suffer from nerves when making a wedding speech. They are not alone, even season speakers get the nerves before making there speech.
Well, it not all doom and gloom.Take up the challenge.
Start with preparation for your speech as early as possible. Research for a theme for your speech. Do not let nerves spoil it for you and everyone else. Reception are informal time. So relax. Take deep breath to help calm those nerves. Do not drink alcohol. You want to be in control when you speak. Write down important notes on index card. Memorize your speech.You want your speech to flow and heart felt, and not from a few sheet of A4 paper.
Make the speech special. Write your own speech instead of using or copying from other people. The audience want to entertained. Get the guest involved, mention people by their name. Add a touch of humor, but do not try to be a comedian. Practice as much as you can. It helps to build confidence.
Writing and speaking for any wedding occasion is challenging but not an impossible task. Even if you have never done if before. you can still delivery a great memorable speech. The important thing is to start, prepare and practice. Keep that in mind and you are on your way to creating an a wonderful speech.
