From years of experience in hanging pictures come about certain rules. First, unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery, don't hang pictures on every available wall space, hang a picture on a wall only if it seems bare without it. Either in groups, over the sofa, a server, a console, or a small pier table is where you should hang pictures.

Other than this a second rule applies. When furniture is under it then do not make the groupings wider than this. Hanging pictures of varying sizes closer together helps you achieve a more unified look. For instance, let's say you have a prized collection of bird prints in frames of varying sizes and types. Apply the concept of pleasing geometrics when you hang them and do not do so frame by frame.

The following are some other rules. Acting as a frame that serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides is the wall even if pictures are hung in close proximity. Either a square or a rectangle is the formation used for pictures when they are hung in pleasing geometry. When you are in possession of four pictures all framed alike and of the same size you may want to hang them geometrically in a square over the sofa, or in a straight line over a long table, or vertically above a small step table. Hanging pictures in a step pattern should only be done when there is a staircase. When it comes to the best pattern it is a straight line meeting at right angles. Most of the time a little regimentation ends up working well.

Maybe you have been able to accumulate a collection of pictures over time including old family portraits, originals, prints, and reproductions. For unification it is important to consider framing and matting everything alike when hanging these together. Gold frames were used for 16 prints and a friend matted these in forest green. Being set against a red wall the look was amazing. There was a friend who added color by matting the pictures over her sofa in varying shades. There were pictures having the same size not to mention the same subject matter.

Have you ever stared at a department store model room and wondered what was missing? No signs show that someone had ever slept, ate, lived, and took phone calls in that particular room. Such a room lacks individuality. Display yours in your home.

A department store model is necessary in order for furniture to be sold but in your home you are provided with comfort and pleasure. In this case your favorite color becomes the best choice. Should you pick colors remember that these can affect the mood of a room. Different colors relay different emotions. Whenever you feel some difficulty in finding a color for our space then looking at a few color charts would be good. There is no choice stronger than individual choice here.
