What one American firm has done to compete and what this CEO says all design firms must do to stay
afloat in this new world economy. Jennifer Freeman, a young Internet Entrepreneur, and CEO of The
Gorilla Agency, has some strong opinions about how to adapt and survive in this market. With the rise in
overseas firms, primarily in India, are gaining popularity very rapidly. Showing up in search engines with
higher and higher rankings by having 24/7 employees posting back links, news articles, posting on forums,
and posting numerous ads it is getting a lot more competitive out there. A ton of companies in overseas
markets have been deploying very aggressive telemarketing and email marketing campaigns as well.
The exposure to US customers has turned the American web designers into a corner. "Something has got
to be done to survive the onslaught." Jennifer tells us. Elaborating further she begins to explain how US
companies will have start to lower their prices or raise them to keep the lights on as a web design or internet
marketing firm based in the USA.
Jennifer's game plan was simple. Lowering prices meant less profit margin. What was clear to her is that
she had to go low enough to create a buzz which meant a serious need in a rise of productivity. We went
the a-la-carte approach where we stripped down our designs to offer less features that a customer does not
need and all the features that the customer does need in the designs. Offering websites that are custom
designed, 100% original to each client for as little as $99. The Gorilla Agency would have to create on
average10 to 20 sites per week to bring in the capitol needed to offer such low prices on a high quality
product. They have been successfully selling site for under $100 for about 6 months now. Since they
changed there prices the customers have come quite rapidly, but they say that they enjoy the quick
turnover.
Jennifer closes her passionate rant by saying, "The other reason we decided to go with a lower budget
niche is the fact that we can possibly globalize our client base. Perhaps combat the presence of overseas
companies by also moving a portion of our efforts overseas as well winning over European and Middle
Eastern clientele."
I began to reflect thinking of how passionate Jennifer is to survive as a business owner. As a woman in a
predominately male industry, as a small business owner who refuses to say die, and continues to fight by
putting her heart and pride into her work. I truly was inspired by the look in her eye. Thinking that this is
the reason the American business owner is unique to the world, our will to fight, our passion, our honor.
All from what I believe stems from living in this free nation, being raised free, and thinking forwardly, or
freely without bounds. Jennifer is a symbol of small business in small towns who need to compete globally
and think globally to cross over into a successful future.
There is of course another way to g for US companies. A good portion of the US firms have also adopted
another approach where they have raised there prices. These are firms looking to create very large high
budget projects in excess of $10,000 per site. These deals come in very seldom but can exceed $100,000 in
an overall price tag depending on the project. Jennifer said, " I would rather cater to the needs of the 99%
than the 1%, it just makes more sense to me."
Either way companies have definitely been adapting to this markets changing ways. Maybe it's a sign of a
more globalized economy where clients are not necessarily also your neighbors any more.
