Originally formed in 1990, The Urban Network is a coalition of ten of the largest and most-respected African-American professional organizations in the New York tri-state area. Collectively, we represent over 2,500 professionals, executives and business owners from various disciplines and industries ranging from law and architecture to engineering and marketing. The Urban Network was formed to provide a unifying body through which member organizations can work in partnership toward achieving common objectives: professional and business development, community service and personal empowerment in the community. In 1998, we expanded our outreach initiatives to include an annual career day to help expose high school and college students to a wide range of career and educational options.
On Saturday, October 10, 2009, The Urban Network will host our annual No Limits Career Day from 9am - 3pm at the New York City College of Technology located at 300 Jay Street, Brooklyn, NY. No Limits gives students ages 14-18 a chance to explore career opportunities by providing a forum to hear first-hand, real world advice from successful Black professionals. What makes this event so unique is that Urban Network professionals are able to connect with these students because we come from the same neighborhoods and have faced the same challenges many of them now must overcome.
At No Limits, students from local high schools throughout the region spend the day attending sessions in a conference-style setting on a variety of topics such as: Preparing for College, How to pay for college with other people's money, Time Management and Goal Setting, Each One: Teach One (Community Development), Social Networking - The Correct Way to Do Business, Networking for Success and I Graduated High School, Now What. In addition to this invaluable information, attendees enjoy breakfast, lunch, handouts, games, keynote speakers and free gifts.
There is no cost to students or parents to attend, and the conference is organized by an all-volunteer team.
If you are interested in participating, please visit www.nolimitscareerday.com to register a student, sign up to volunteer, make a donation, and/or be a workshop speaker.
The New York Chapter, 501(c)(6), is the 7th largest chapter of 56 Chapters across the United States. Chartered in September 1982, our chapter has successfully reached out to our community through networking, education programs, seminars, workshops, and the annual conferences. We also serve as community partner for the Community Technology Centers and engage everyone to learn about technology, careers, and higher education.
