UPS or Uninterruptable Power Supply is the need of the hour if you use computer. It can elongate the life of your, save your data from getting corrupted and your work time also, in case power goes off. A UPS is equipped with a battery which supplies power to the computer for a short period so that computer can properly shut down.

A UPS is a battery-run device which allows the PC to run for a period when the power supply stops abruptly. Beside computer, UPS can be used with other devices also. Use of UPS with computer allows you to close the open applications properly which prevents the loss of any data which is mid-edit or unsaved. Its usage also prevents any possible damage of the hardware due to power surge or spikes when the electricity resumes. A UPS protect the computer against the four major power problems; voltage surges and spikes, voltage sags, total power failure and the frequency differences.

A UPS is placed between a computer and the main power supply. Typically a UPS is comprised of a battery charger for the lead acid battery, a DC to AC converter and the surge suppressor. UPS controls the incoming flow of the e power. If a UPS detects that there is fluctuation in the power supply or there is drop in electricity, it starts functioning. It starts converting DC to AC charge and provides power to the computer for about 15 minutes.

There are three types of the uninterruptible power supply; online or double conversion, line interactive and the offline (Standby).

An online or double conversion uninterruptible power supply controls the quality of the power supplied. It makes the powers supply free of any fluctuations by controlling the voltage and frequency variation. A UPS provides interruption free power supply to the computer.

Line interactive UPS regulates and stabilizes the voltage fluctuations with the help of passive electronic regulation components inside. When the main power supply is there, this UPS monitors the input of the mains.

For single PCs, we commonly use standby UPS. These are also called as the off-line UPS. This kind of UPS is compact and is designed for the desktop computers. It tracks voltage and the frequency variation in the main power supply. It supplies power for short duration of 10-15 minutes in case of power failure.

For selecting a UPS for your system, you need to check its voltage/Ampere rating. It indicates the load size that it can provide power for.
