South America is a continent of great diversity, a place where everyone can have a highly memorable vacation. There's so many things to do, and places to see, it would take well over a year to see all the major sites. Here I'll mention just a few of South America's travel highlights.
The huge number of beautiful beach resorts in Brazil, each with it's own unique charms can be staggering and overwhelming. The Lencois National Park, just East of Sao Luiz on the North coast, offer some of the most wonderful undeveloped beaches - there's huge empty beaches backed by sand dunes that run for over 250 km. If you prefer a more amenities, there's also a host of small, chic resorts throughout Brazil - Pipa, Itacare, Ilha Grande and Fernando de Noronha are just a few.
Awakening to the sounds of howler monkeys screaming outside your jungle lodge in Brazil's Amazon rainforest can be quite scarey, but highly memorable. There's lots of wildlife that can be seen in the Amazon region, but a visit is more about experiencing quite how enchanting the rainforest can be. It's also possible to visit the Amazon in other South American countries, such as Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, but most frequently visited is Brazil's Amazon.
Chile's Atacama desert is arid, barren and beautiful. Volcanoes spring out of a lunar like landscape full of hot springs, geysers and salt plains. There's also some enthralling pre-Inca forts and stone age settlements in the desert.
Latin America's most frequently visited attraction is the Inca ruins of Machu Piccu. The highland location is quite spectacular, as are the Inca ruins themselves. Many choose to travel to
Machu Piccu by way of the Inca Trail, a legendary 4 day uphill hike through rainforests old Inca ruins.
The most romantic colonial city in South America can be found in
Cartegena in Colombia. Cartagena is well away from Colombia's danger spots, and has for a long time been a safe city to visit. While the cities beaches are rather dirty and unrelaxing, the nearby Rosario Islands offer a perfect low key and beautiful beach resort.
At 979 metres in height, Venezuela's Angel Falls is the worlds highest waterfall. A flight over the falls is a quite amazing experience, or alternatively canoe tours can be booked to see the falls at much closer quarters. The landscape and mountains in nearby Canaima National Park is also very scenic - this is where the Last of the Mohicans film was shot.
Travel to South America and experience a culturally rich continent of great diversity and beauty with some of the friendliest, most beautiful people on Earth.
