For centuries the best way to get a horse from point A to point B was simply to ride it. In fact, until the invention of the motorcar, horses were the way to get from one place to another most efficiently. While riding remains a popular activity, trailer transport has replaced long-distance rides as the quickest method for
horse shipping. Unfortunately, equine are not always comfortable loading and unloading. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to familiarize your horse with the trailer and make the process a breeze.
Many horses are difficult to trailer initially because they fear the unfamiliar object. To help accustom the horse, lead it around the trailer and let it become adjusted before attempting to walk it inside. You want to avoid bribing or punishing the animal to force it inside, so the best method is to allow it to get comfortable.
It is important that your horse is trained to follow simple commands in order to safely trailer. Walk, Stop, Back Up and Turn Around should be the most important to navigate the process, so be sure that your animal knows those terms.
Once the horse is familiar around the trailer, you simply need to practice walking the animal in. As with any other activity, your demeanor can affect the horse's, so remain calm and confident. Lead him to the ramp, guide his nose into the entry and give the command to "walk." Don't lose your patience if the animal initially wants to back away or remain in place. Stay calm and persistent until the horse enters the trailer.
Repeat this practice until your horse is comfortable entering and exiting the trailer. Not only will this save you trouble next time you plan on moving the animal, but it will also prove to be invaluable in the event of a medical emergency.
