1. Do Your Homework- The first and most important step in picking an affiliate program is the research. Focus on products and services that will relate with your site theme. My site gives away free Internet marketing tips, techniques, and secrets, thus I have about 10 marketing services that I have used and freely promote. If I were to have an affiliate link to dog food, you can imagine, I wouldn't make very many sales.
2. Is There an Audience? - You need to make sure the product has good demand in the market. Why would you want to promote a product that has no interest on the web? You wouldn't be that stupid. If you are thinking of promoting an "all natural weight loss pill," do a quick Google search for "lose weight naturally or "natural weight loss pill" and see how many related sites appear. If there are only a few then there might not be enough demand.
3. Be Interesting- You really want to make sure it interests you. This is important because you will be in a better position to convince people to buy the product if you have knowledge and interest regarding the product.
4. Be Genuine- If you haven't used a particular product, don't write a testimonial saying it is has changed your life and everyone needs it. I try to only promote products I have personally used or a business associate I know has used and recommends. I paid a lot of money over the years for products that were not very good, so when I find something truly beneficial, I want to share it will others.
5. Live in Reality- It is important to keep in mind, if you don't have much traffic coming to your site, then don't expect high returns from day one. If you earn 10% on a $20 book, you earned $2. $2 is not going to change your life. But if you sell $1000, $2 books, $2000 is a different story
6. High/Low Yield vs. High/ Low Conversions- It is important to keep in mind that higher priced items yield larger commissions, than lower priced items. Basic economics tell us you will sell fewer higher priced items than lower priced items. Realize you generally will not be able to sell as many $3,000 computers as you can $75 mp3 players.
7. It's All About Systems- Affiliate programs are money making systems. If you can make 20 cents a month from this system, then with more traffic you can make $2 a month, then $20, then $200, then $2000,… you get the picture.
8. Increase Traffic- More traffic to your site means more people being presented with your affiliate marketing message. We all know sales are a numbers game. Increase traffic, increase the number of books sold, increase profits. Never forget, traffic is useless if it can't be converted to money
9. FREE! FREE! FREE! - When you are first starting out as an affiliate, start with free programs. There are more than enough to choose from at no cost.
10. Test, Then Test Again- Don't assume you know what the market's wants, needs, and desires are. The foolish marketer thinks they know everything. The smart and wealthy marketer, listens to everything the market has to say. If no one is buying your affiliate product, then try another one, and track the results.
