Call Forwarding is an extremely useful telephone feature that enables you to receive and answer telephone calls from different locations. The Call Forwarding feature is usually of two types - Call Forwarding Variable and Call Forward Busy/Don't Answer.

Call Forwarding Variable is a feature whereby you can choose a number to which all your incoming calls can be directed. Once you avail this facility, all incoming calls will be received by the telephone operator or the centralized answering services and your particular extension will receive only the calls meant for you or your department. But with this facility, the onus is on you to activate, reactivate and deactivate Call Forwarding before and after business hours or when you leave office.

When utilizing Call Forwarding Variable feature, your telephone will generate a half ring each time an incoming call is forwarded - to remind you that your feature is activated. The call however cannot be answered at your location. But your telephone can be used nonetheless for outgoing calls even when the central point is answering the incoming calls.

Call Forwarding Busy/Don't Answer, on the other hand, is a feature whereby all incoming calls are automatically transferred when all of your lines are busy, or after a pre-determined number of rings. With this totally automatic feature, you are not required to either activate or deactivate Call Forwarding. The huge advantage of the feature is it is automatic and you can set it and forget it and thus many prefer this alternative.

Make sure that your phone has been provided with the call forwarding feature and if you are not sure, better contact your phone service provider to find out. You can press *72 to forward incoming calls to a different phone number, and then dial the phone number you want your incoming calls forwarded to. If the call is answered, call forwarding feature is in place. If there is a busy tone, repeat the process.

You should test the call forwarding feature to ensure it works well so that you do not lose out on any incoming calls. Call your number and make sure the call is forwarded to the preset number. If it is functioning properly, your phone should have a half ring before the incoming call goes to the other number.

When availing the call forwarding feature, you must bear in mind the costs involved. Please know that the phone line that is forwarded is billed as if an outgoing call is being made. This means long distance charges will apply if the number the calls are forwarded to is a long distance number.

Most call forwarding features use the *72/*73 code. However, if you are willing to pay an additional fee, the service provider will allow remote call forwarding - which can be controlled from any phone. Remote call forwarding is predominantly used by business enterprises as a marketing tool.

Local phone numbers are automatically routed from anywhere in the world to the phone number or voice mailbox designated by you. Sign up with a remote call-forwarding service provider. Most reputed telephone service providers offer this service, and it can be activated in less than one day.
