Nokia has certainly been on good form recently, releasing a string of head-turning smartphones with specifications which suggest the mobile phone goliath has certain rival companies in its sights. Models such as the N8 and E7 both sport a number of great features, such as a 12 and 8 megapixel camera respectively, as well as the versatile and customisable Symbian 3 operating system.

On the surface, these two handsets look very similar, however upon closer inspection; you will notice that the E7 comes with a slide out QWERTY keyboard, making it the perfect choice for those who regularly send emails and SMS messages. Both the E7 and N8 offer advanced touchscreens, with the E7 providing a 4 inch offering and the N8 has a 3.5 inch screen. Both screens offer AMOLED technology, along with the ability to display up to 16 million colours, ensuring superb quality display of on screen imagery, as well as a responsive means of navigating the user interface.

The Nokia E7 has a high quality 8 megapixel camera, which indeed puts many rival camera phones to shame. It offers a high pixel resolution with flash, the ability to shoot HD video as well as geo-tagging. Although this is one of the most impressive phones to be found on a phone currently on the market, those serious about their photography need to check out the Nokia N8. Boasting a huge 12 megapixels, it comes with all the features of the camera on the E7, but also sports Carl Zeiss optics. The legendary camera lens manufacturer provides the hardware of the camera lens, ensuring the utmost picture quality, and leaves users with no doubts about the build quality of the camera. This leaves little argument that the Nokia N8 is the ultimate cameraphone available now.

Internet browsing on the move is a major factor for anyone choosing a new smartphone. With both handsets boasting download speeds of 10.2 megabytes per second (in areas with 3G coverage), a speedy browsing experience is assured. Additionally, both handsets also come with full Wi-Fi connectivity. The result of utilising this feature is that users will have an even faster connection, as it uses the signals provided by local wireless internet routers whenever users have the appropriate access. This could be in a commercial, domestic or public location, with a growing number of public Wi-Fi hotspots providing free internet access.

Both handsets come with Symbian^3 installed as standard, as the operating system of choice. This allows users to have up to 3 homescreens customised to their preference with apps, widgets and themes configured to the users own taste. Additionally, both the N8 and E7 come with comprehensive multimedia compatibility and connectivity to compatible hardware devices thanks to Bluetooth and USB, as well as generous levels of internal storage.

Whilst both phones have impressive specifications which are similar, there are also a number of differences. Hardware-wise, the main differences have to be the camera on the N8 and the slide-out QWERTY keyboard on the E7. Clearly, Nokia have aimed two very different handsets at two different target groups. If you are a business user, you may want to take a closer look at the E7. For the multimedia enthusiast or for those who are into their photography, be sure to check out the N8. Both handsets come in a range of vibrant colour schemes, meaning a handset to suit every taste is sure to be found.
