Hot on the heels of its second chocolate mobile phone as the year ends, Korean mobile phone giant LG surprises the mobile community with yet another new handset - the LG GD510 Pop. It looks like LG can keep a secret after all. LG BL20 Chocolate has been leaking all over the internet for months but the new Pop is a real surprise, literally popping out of the woodworks to the delight of the market. So what makes it unique is a set of features LG claims is a product of market research that it has conducted beforehand.

What the Consumers Have to Say

No frills, nothing expensive, just a large full touchscreen mobile phone with really useful features. Nothing fancy to push the price tag up and nothing elaborate and complex from new fancy features. That says it all. The LG GD510 Pop seems to epitomize the results of LG's market research. It looks like phone that is a product of a basic directive to its engineers: design a high end phone, then take out all the features the market won't use.

So now you have a sleek 3" touchscreen that LG claims to be the most compact of all touchscreen phones with the same 3" display. That may be true thanks to sporting the narrowest bezel around the screen. And at a mere 11.2mm thickness, the Pop can claim to be the most compact all right. But that's not all the market wants.

So LG put in the basic quad band GSM radio plus 3G capability with HSDAP/HSUPA for really fast internet surfing and downloading that phone users can't get enough of these days. LG also put in the usual Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP as well as FM radio and the media players supporting the popular audio and video content codecs out there.

Then you get a generous 8 GB of internal memory. If that's not enough, you also get microSD slot support for up to 16 GB. There's a modest 3/15 megapixel autofocus camera that is at par with many mobile handsets in this class. It is plain the market is not yet ready for 8 megapixel cameras that expensive high-enders boast. Lastly, LG's research results must have revealed that the market rarely uses WiFi, so LG dropped the WiFi capability.

How Soon

Expect the LG GD510 Pop to start appearing in the UK markets by mid to late October or early November. LG wants to target the same crowd that has bought 7 million LG Cookies to date and has priced the Pop accordingly. No confirmation on the price, but if the LG Cookie pricing is any indication, the Pop just might fall in the €160 price point.

The LG GD510 Pop is sure to go down a treat with those who were so fond of the Cookie, and if you are interested in this low cost touchscreen handset you may be interested in looking at some of the GD510 18 month contracts or the deals on offer for the GD510 Pop on O2.
