A surgical technician's primary role is usually that of preparing an operating theater prior to surgery. They are often also responsible to maintain a sterile and clean room during an operation and they are frequently in charge of sterilization of instruments used during an operation. Aside from preparing the theater they also often attend surgery where they not only maintain a clean environment but also are on hand should their help be needed for any other duties. They need to be fairly well versed and knowledgeable about the different instruments and equipment used during surgical procedures and have a very good working knowledge of cleanliness and sterilization procedures and techniques.

While tasks may differ between hospitals, technicians often also have quite a bit of contact with patients pre-operatively, while they are in the theater and recovery rooms, and even afterward once the patient has returned to the wards. Patients who are having surgical procedures are frequently quite ill and in pain. They are usually also quite frightened and apprehensive about the operation and concerned about the outcome. After surgery is over, patients are at first sometimes disorientated and then later they usually feel pain, exhaustion and often face many challenges along the road to recovery. Additionally, depending on whether the operation was a success or not, they may also be facing emotional trauma and anxiety. Recovery is fraught with obstacles even for the healthiest patient.

When human beings are in pain or are afraid or anxious they often require extra special care, kindness, empathy and understanding of their plight. Even though a surgical technician may not be the main one responsible for their care either before or after the operation it is important that they offer support to the patients. In many ways, patients look to those who care for them on a daily basis, those who prep them prior to an operation or who change their dressings, for comfort and support. Kindness is a virtue in anyone, but it is an essential attribute for those caring for patients no matter what the capacity. Kindness will soothe and comfort, and can make a positive difference when it comes to helping a patient have a comfortable recovery.
