The Characteristics of Effective Surgical Technicians: Confidence
The role of a Surgical Technician is vital within the health industry. Surgical technicians usually prepare an operating theater prior to surgery, ensuring that the room is properly sterilized and that all of the items in the room are sterile too. They are often also responsible for the sterilization of equipment and for making sure that a high cleanliness standard is maintained during an operation. Other duties are varied and frequently differ from hospital to hospital. Among other things, they often help operating staff into their operating gowns and are frequently on hand during an operation to give any assistance they can to the operating staff, whether it is running errands or keeping them supplied with sterile instruments and other items.

A truly effective surgical technician must be confident at all times that he or she is meeting the requirements demanded by the position. There can be no room for error when it comes to tasks that involve patient's well being and ultimate safety. Lack of confidence and surety can result in mistakes happening or serious errors of judgment being made which can then ultimately jeopardize the life of a patient.

The position also often entails a fair amount of contact with the patients themselves, both prior to and immediately after surgery. Prior to surgery the technician is often required to perform various tasks to prepare the patient for surgery. Post operatively the patient may be escorted back to the ward by the technician and, later, may have their dressings attended to by them as well. It is imperative that anyone coming into contact with a patient before surgery and in the recovery stages are confident and act with confidence in their dealings with patients. This inspires feelings of comfort and reassurance in patients, which is not only important for their own mental preparedness but is also important for a healthy post operative recovery period.

Those working in the medical profession are known for their quiet assurance and confidence, and surgical technicians are no exception. They must also inspire trust in the patients they come in contact with on a daily basis.
