The Skrulls are an alien race of shapeshifters who have a long history with the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. During marvel secret invasion, the Skrulls have invaded the earth by taking the place of various superhumans throughout the marvel universe.

In Annihilation, a crossover involving many of the space-faring characters in the marvel universe, the Skrull Empire was destroyed. It is said that the motivation for marvel secret invasion is this event, and because of it, according to Skrull prophecies, the Skrulls believe that earth is their birthright, and so they take it upon themselves to acquire it with trickery followed by force. Having its roots as far back as New Avengers #1 and the Secret Wars mini-series in 2004, the marvel secret invasion was underway and set in motion as readers would soon discover.

What kicked off the marvel secret invasion was the death of Elektra in the pages of New Avengers, who then reverts back to her true form, that of a Skrull. Mr. Fantastic and Hank Pym examine the body and know this is just the beginning of a mass marvel secret invasion. Of course, they would, as it is revealed later on in marvel secret invasion that they are both also Skrulls, or at least at some point they were traded out for Skrulls. Meanwhile, a Skrull spacecraft crashes in the Savage Land, and the New Avengers and Mighty Avengers go to investigate.

Then chaos breaks out. All the villains being held in The Raft and in The Cube are released. At the same time, Thunderbolts Mountain is attacked by Captain Marvel, who has recently returned from the dead, supposedly (yep, he's a Skrull too). Back in the Savage Land it gets more confusing as old versions of various superheroes claim to be the real thing, and now all the Avengers are having second thoughts about who is who. The marvel secret invasion has just got started and already things are out of hand.

And that's just the beginning of the massive marvel secret invasion story, which culminated with more changes and questions left than Civil War did. The marvel universe has been shaken to its core from the events of the marvel secret invasion, and it may never recover. The next event that continues on the threads started in the marvel secret invasion is Dark Reign. The Avengers get a makeover and Norman Osborn, of all people, has power a psychopath like him should never have.
