Most children can recognize a tune and even copy it by humming it from a surprisingly early age. It almost seems as though it's genetically programmed.
So, if your child starts showing these tendencies, should you immediately get them started on the piano? Many moms and dads wonder whenthey should begin piano lessons for children. In my view it's best to be patient and not rush into anything.
It's worth remembering that real musical prodigies are extremely uncommon so if you back off a bit you won't be missing very much. When it's convenient to do so, sit you little treasure at a piano and watch what activity ensues. If (s)he starts producing interesting tunes within a few minutes, then you might be on to something, but the vast majority of kids will have a bit of a bash around, run their fingers up and down the keyboard to make a glissando and bang on the low notes to make a thunder like sound. They love that. Of course, this doesn't mean that they won't become very good at the piano but (as will be the case with many kids) they'll need a bit of encouragement and guidance.
There are several ways of providing this sort of guidance. And in this technological world many of them are computerised. There are computer applications that operate in conjunction with the piano to teach about the musical notes. There are keyboards with color-coded keys that plug into your television set and that provide no end of inspiration to younger kids to get playing. So piano lessons for children won't always require a piano!
For older children, there are downloadable e-books that start from the very basics and work up to more advanced playing. The beauty of these is that each piece of music that your child needs to play is accompanied by an audio clip of what it sounds like. So your child can listen to what each piece sounds like before attempting to play it. This makes it so much easier and can really speed up the pace of progress.
Whether you choose one or the other, don't expect too much at first. Just remember that learning the piano takes a lot of time so piano lessons for children should be provided for your child at the right time.
