If you're interested in creating your own gift hampers for a holiday, birthday or special occasion, here are a few tips for doing it right.

Choose the right container. Choose an attractive container that's just a little smaller than you think you'll need; decorate it with attractive paper or homemade artwork if it's plain to begin with; and look for something that can be reused.

Wrapping is protective and pretty. Shredded newspapers will work just as well as expensive store-bought paper; make sure you don't pack it too tightly.

Pick the right theme. With a little imagination you can put together a theme for any occasion. Some ideas include a baby-themed hamper that includes cute toys and clothes for a new mom or a hamper of gardening tools, seeds and accessories for an avid gardener.

Choose a wide variety of items. It's often a good idea to include a lot of items that are useful and that the person will use every day, as well as a few luxury treats the person would never buy for himself.

Add a personal touch. Choose items that have special meaning to the recipient—it's always a hit to include a few items that reference jokes or special moments you've shared.

It doesn't have to be expensive. If money's tight, include homemade items—or buy in bulk if you plan to make several.

Creating your own gift hamper is an excellent idea if you want a fun, inexpensive gift that fits any occasion and is sure to appeal to anyone. Choose your items and container wisely, and put some time and effort into presentation and personalization. If you do, your homemade gift hamper is likely to be the hit of the party.
