It's National Stalker Awareness month. Statistics have shown that most of the stalkers are people that have had some sort of emotional history to the individual that they are stalking like a spouse, partner, ex-lover or acquaintance, even family members. Stalking is a crime that affects over one million women and nearly to four hundred thousand men each year in the U.S. alone. Many of the victims are even harassed in their place of work.
Have you ever noticed co-workers wearing long sleeved shirts when it is too warm to be wearing them, or any other strange signs? There are so many women that are in situations where they feel trapped. They've been threatened that if they tell anyone, they'll be harmed even worse.
Sometimes being a friend to them can help them realize that life's much too short to be living the way that they're living. Work is a safe haven for several emotionally and physically abused women.
There is a group named "Safe Horizon" that teaches companies how to realize the effects of domestic violence. They also provide domestic violence hot line phone numbers on posters to be displayed in various places in the workplace.
It's unfortunate that for many, work of all places is a place that they can have some inner peace. As a co-worker or associate, it is good to talk to others for their personal well being. It's good to listen and be a shoulder to lean on. If you feel someone is having hard times at home, perhaps being harassed and intimidated, perhaps you may be able to speak with them about getting help. You might also let them know that they should have some type of indistinguishable self defense item with them at all times, so that should they be in grave physical danger, they may get away once and for all!
A
pepper spray ring or a
pepper spray pen and
lipstick pepper spray are all great undercover tools of self defense. If you do not feel comfortable speaking with them, you could always mention this to a supervisor. If they're not able to purchase one of these without their aggressor knowing, maybe you can do them a favor. You just may save their life!
