Today I’d like to introduce a real drama animation-Nodame Cantabile, which is a really interesting Japanese drama series. This romantic comedy has total 11 episodes, which takes place in a music university.

Nodame Cantabile is a story of two very opposite people, which based on the hit comic book with the same title by Tomoko Ninomiya. The opening song of this drama is Symphony No.7 in A major by Beethoven, and the ending song is Phapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.

Megumi Noda, or Nodame, is an extremely talented pianist who wants to be a kindergarten teacher. She prefers playing by ear rather than reading the music score. She is messy and disorganized, takes baths several days apart and loves to eat, sometimes stealing her friends’ lunchbox when it is filled with delicacies.

Shinichi Chiaki, is Momogaoka’s top student. Born into a musical family, he is talented in piano and violin and has secret ambitions to become a conductor. An arrogant multilingual perfectionist who once lived abroad in the music capitals of the world as a young boy, he feels mired in Japan because of a childhood phobia.

Story between Nodame and Chiaki is really interesting and funny. They meet by accident. Nodame quickly falls in love, but it takes much longer for Chiaki to even begin to appreciate Nodame’s unusual qualities. Their relationship causes them both to develop and grow. Because of Nodame, Chiaki got the opportunity to lead a real student orchestra and begins to have a broader appreciation of people’s musical abilities. Because of Chiaki, Nodame faces her fears and enters a piano competition. Opportunities open up as both begin taking risks, stretching themselves far more than they ever thought possible.

The look of the drama stays remarkable true to the manga. When you watch the drama the first time, you must be astonished by their exaggerate behaviors. It's disconcerting since I'm not used to live-action stories trying to ape the style of an anime, but eventually you sort of get used to it. The actors there really did a great job, and they really try to match the manga’s exaggerated slapstick humor. For example, at the scene that Halisen is angry about Chiaki’s playing. When he smacks Chiaki with his fan, he doesn’t just bop him on the side of his head, he slams it into Chiaki’s head and sends him flying off the stool in slow motion. And so forth.

The best part about the Nodame drama, I think, is the music. It’s what makes the drama rewarding to watch, and it helps the scene gain its full impact. Nodame draws on a lot of different sources, from Beethoven and Mozart to Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Handel and more. The classics aren't used just for lessons and performances, but also as background music, so we hear a lot of Flight of the Bumblebee or Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and more. So you can enjoy them through every interesting scenes instead of a tutorial way.

To many people who have read the manga, they think it venture to watch the drama. But I started with this drama, and I really love it. It’s inspired me to continue playing piano, and seeing things in a simpler way. There are three movies as continuation of the drama series that I have caught up with. Well. I find what I’m going to do this weekend then.
