The Injury
Shoulder injuries generally involve torn or sprained muscles in the rotator cuff, a group of supporting muscles. Bad technique, muscle imbalance and lifting too heavy weights are common causes of problems.
Some shoulder injuries will recover with the care advised below, but if you suspect an acute problem- symptoms include severe pain, pain at night and pain that radiates into the neck or upper arm- you may want to see a physiotherapist.
The Solution
Apply ice to the swelling for 15 minutes, and then apply heat for another 15 minutes. Alternate a few times and continue this treatment for 2-3 days.
Note your symptoms, and what positions of the arm aggravate or relieve pain. Write this down, so that if you do have to see a physiotherapist you will be able to give them as much information as possible.
Continue with the program but don't do anything that hurts- keep movements within pain-free ranges.
See a physio if things do not improve
