U.S restaurants are becoming the victims of stubborn (saddest) time in 17 years as tight credit and declining home prices add to weal and woe ( add insult to the injury ) of consumer and force them to satisfy on grub (food) less than they are wishing and to spend less than they are hoping.

A National Restaurant Association chief economist, Hudson Riehle made comments on this burning issue recently, " This is the most challenging environment for restaurant operators since 1991" further added.

"Considering the consumer spending trends reveal the facts that it could be the most challenging environment since the early 1980s" he quoted.

Using retail sales data, Hudson brought into account about 4.2 percent restaurant sales growth for first nine months of 2008. But nevertheless, when high cost wholesale foods are highlighted, he said that the industry growth is immobile.

"Restaurant spending is surely feeble than it was in 2001the last recessionary period. The previous weakest year was 1991, when sale growth declined alarmingly up to 0.2 percent in actual" he told.

So far in 2008, consumers are still incurring half of their food expenditures in restaurants however there is quirk that spending has prejudice towards lower-cost restaurants.

"The lower cost of the operation, the slight more hopeful those operators are" he confirmed.

"Quick service restaurants, which have lower average check are preferred to some extent to higher average check operations" he added.

Tight credit and falling home prices have ruined the consumer spending power.

"When consumers are enjoying the rocketing increment in their accommodations that reflected higher spending and the restaurant industry was definitely progressing by leaps and bounds that time" Hudson told.

In a recent NRA survey, NRA associates called the economy as their venturesome challenge, compared with a year ago.

"The whole scenario has changed surprisingly over the past year" Hudson Riehle made a crux.
