The first thing you need to do before making any purchases is to decide what style or theme is right for you, formal, casual, rustic, southwestern, Japanese, there are so many possibilities. After you have made this initial decision, stay with that style and theme so the overall effect does not become confusing. For instance, you wouldn't necessarily want to combine bronze garden sculptures of saints or cherubs with rustic wooden wagon wheels.

Determine what the primary function of your patio area will be, in other words what will the space be used for most often? Do you plan to entertain a lot of outdoor dinner guests? If so, be sure your patio space has plenty of room for the largest number of people right from the beginning. Will your patio be more of a private, reflective retreat for enjoying the sun, reading a book, or gazing up at the stars?

From all of the ideas you have gathered, select those you believe to be the best and incorporate them into your design and before you know it you will have a design that will satisfy all of your needs.

Winding garden walkways, if laid out correctly, can be very relaxing and functional for accessing your garden. walkways of stone, brick, flagstone, gravel, or mown turf will definitely add to the ambience, although grass paths do require more upkeep. Plan to include some garden sculptures or sitting benches along the walkway as they will offer some wonderful focal points.

Some say the secret to a beautiful garden and patio design is having some hard structure such as gazebos or pergolas. Garden structures help create forms and lines, giving your garden and patio design definition and dimension. Plus, in the winter when most plants are bare, your garden will preserve its shape and overall design. It's amazing how just one or two structures can produce this satisfying effect.

Select garden and landscaping elements that are built to withstand the weather but still look good. You can include wood patio furniture made from treated pine, cedar, teak, or eucalyptus; metal patio furniture made from wrought iron or aluminum; a trellis, an arbor, or some decorative fencing. Another element to consider is a water feature, which bring incredible beauty and atmosphere to any garden design. History shows that entire garden designs were planned around fountains and ponds. Finally, enhance the natural beauty of your patio decor with garden accents made from stone, glass, copper, or bronze.

So your first decision is to determine what overall theme you want to have. When you have made this initial choice, you should attempt to be consistent with all your subsequent selections and try to keep your theme in the forefront. Being consistent with your theme will make for a more harmonious design by ensuring that all of the elements work together. Having your garden accents contribute to the harmony and balance of your patio design will enable you to relax and enjoy your space this summer and all year round.
