This tip will directly benefit those of us who have a wordpress.org blog, but if you don't you still need to know about 'pings' and how they directly affect the amount of traffic you get to your website. You don't necessarily need to have a WP blog, there are free ones available, but I to get any kind of consistent FREE web traffic and establish a solid online presence you should consider it.

So what are "Pings" anyway?

Pings are used to syndicate your content on the internet as well as to notify the search engines that your website, or blog, has been updated with new content.

Why is this important?

For one you want your information (and your business and website) as many places as possible in order to get in front of the most potential clients. This is done through syndication, the first benefit of pinging.

Secondly, when the search engine has been notified that you have new content, they will send out "spiders" to "crawl" your website and index your updated content. This allows you to be rewarded with higher rankings in the search engine results because you have relevant content to your targeted search terms.

The importance of pinging is the speed at which you get results. Search engines will eventually get around to crawling your site, but by using update services you are telling all of the search engines to index your site right now! So the changes you have made to your website are quickly reflected in the search results. And the quicker that you're at a higher ranking the more leads you will ultimately bring in.

How do I set up my site to notify the search engines when I have new content?

You need to ping many services after you post to your blog, and Ping-o-matic, the default Wordpress ping service, does not ping all of the services you need to syndicate your blog and get it crawled by the search engines. But since the Wordpress.org blog is highly customizable, you can 'ping' or notify as many of these site update services as you want, you just need to add them to the list.

Here's what you do:

  1. Login into your wordpress account and select Settings, and Writing.

  2. Go to http://fullserviceonlinemarketing.com/seo-and-web-traffic-resources/free-ping-list/ and copy the list
  3. Under Update Services in the Writing Settings of your Blog paste in the list

And that's it! You need not do anything more, and when you post another entry to your blog every one of these services will be contacted and the search engines notified.
