Much is being written these days about search engine optimization (SEO) and how to get your website found by people searching for your product or service. Unfortunately, this can make the simpler basics seem less important than they really are. Since your website is going to be found and read by human beings, it pays to take some time to think about what they might like to find when they get there. After all, your website is - or should be - for the people who will read it.
Since this is true, and people go searching for a reason, it's helpful to start by putting yourself in your customer's or searcher's shoes. in other words, try to think like they do. Ask yourself some questions. What exactly are they looking for? How do they hope the information is displayed? are they looking for the solution or answer to a problem or question? If so, what exactly is that problem or question?
Only after you have the answers to these questions can you begin to write website content that your customers and prospects will find useful. If they find your site useful, isn't it likely they will visit again, and even more likely they will buy something from you? Of course it is.
Everything you may have read or heard about metatags, backlinks, and other SEO terms may be quite true, but if your webpages don't offer something of value, none of it really matters very much. On the other hand, give your visitors something worthwhile, something that solves their very real problems and answers their questions, something that establishes you as the go-to expert in your field, and they'll always come back for more.
They'll buy your product or service too!
That's also what makes your website look good to Google and the other search engines- relevant content. In other words, content that gives web searchers what they are searching for. After all, Google is driven by an insatiable desire to provide searchers with a useful and relevant experience, and the more your site helps them do that, the more Google will reward you with higher rankings.
So, when it comes to search engine optimization, start by making sure you have a website worth optimizing.
