BMX stands for Bicycle Motocross. It is an extreme cycling sport where competitors riding bicycles race towards the finish line on dirt tracks very much similar to motocross tracks. It started in the 1970s when children began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks in southern California. The slowly increasing popularity of what started out as a children's' game inspired the motocross superstars of that era. What happened next was sheer history.
The popularity of BMX racing began to skyrocket by the mid 1970s. Because of its size and availability the Schwin Sting Ray became a popular bicycle model for the sport, although the manufacturer Schwin initially considered BMX racing too dangerous.
The Sting Ray was easily customized for better handling and performance. By the time Schwin decided to ride to BMX racing bandwagon it was too late. Their Predator model, which was the first Schwin bicycle designed specifically for BMX racing, came out when other manufacturers have already taken over the BMX market.

The popularity of BMX racing has grown so much that it has evolved into a popular extreme sport among today's youth. Professional BMX tournaments have started opening all across the United States. The sport's popularity made it ideal for other novelty items manufacturers to base their products on. Souvenirs such as BMX shirts and hats became popular instantly.
Some of the leaders in the clothing industry back then took on BMX racing as an ideal avenue for them to market their apparel. They had famous racers wear their BMX t shirts during competitions and public appearances, and their fans soon followed suit. Soon enough, BMX shirts became one of the most popular attractions in any modern clothing store.
Clothing designers began experimenting with BMX shirts. They used different material and wide array of designs that cater to the youth. The BMX shirts became more and more comfortable to wear, and the designs became more attractive, that it took on a growth of its own. BMX shirts became so trendy that it was no longer worn during races. It is one of the most longstanding cultural icons of its decade.
