Facial cosmetic surgery is an expensive and invasive option intended to improve one or more features on the face. However, in rare circumstances surgery does not produce the desired results, and patients are left questioning their next move. In the case of a botched nose job, a revision rhinoplasty is meant to repair the aesthetic or functional damage to the nose that was caused by the first surgeon.

How Long Should I Wait?
Most experienced cosmetic surgeons urge patients to wait at least a year after their previous rhinoplasty before having a second one performed. While this may seem like an excruciatingly long period of time--especially when living with undesirable results--it usually takes around a year to see the final results of a rhinoplasty. The alternative to waiting is accepting life with a nose that doesn't meet the initial expectations.

Preventing the Need for a Revision Rhinoplasty
Although one can never completely predict the outcome of cosmetic surgery, there are two sound points for patients to consider when initially researching rhinoplasty. The first is to select a respectable cosmetic surgeon with a long history of successful surgeries, and a stable practice. Each patient should research the surgeon and his or her credentials, education, and training. They should ask the surgeon for references who will vouch for his or her work. It might be tempting to hurry through the process of selecting a surgeon and hastily schedule the surgery, but thoroughly investigating potential surgeons and all options will be invaluable to the patient's surgical experience.

Once rhinoplasty patients have selected a qualified and talented surgeon to perform the rhinoplasty, it's also important for him or her to discuss realistic expectations of the surgery and the outcome with the surgeon. A responsible and reliable surgeon will explain what is safe and reasonable to expect of the nose job. In turn, patients should be honest and forthcoming about the type of look he or she is hoping to achieve.

Once the patient and surgeon are both on the same page regarding the goals of the surgery, the patient is less likely to be surprised and / or upset by the results (assuming the surgeon performs the procedure safely and correctly).

For those interested in getting a nose job, it is important for them to locate a skilled rhinoplasty surgeon in their area. That way they can discuss all of the risks and benefits associated with rhinoplasty.
