Whether you're new to skin care or have been cleansing for years, healthy skin is achieved by having a good daily skin care routine, morning and night. Your skin is able to cleanse, heal and even renew itself and these results are partly governed by how well you look after it.

Having a good daily skin care routine is very important to the health of your skin and an essential step towards having a healthier, smoother and a clearer complexion.

The three basic steps for a good routine is to cleanse, tone and moisturizer. Masks, scrubs and other skin care products generally focus on certain areas or concerns such as dryness, acne and wrinkles. It is vitally important that you know your skin type, and whether or not you need to review your skin care routine in order to get the results that you want.

Some questions to ask your self are:

Is your skin having frequent acne outbreaks?

Are you using the wrong skin care products daily?

Do you need to review the way you take care of your skin or simplify it?

A good skin care routine shouldn't be hard or take a lot of time. It should be simple, effective and last no longer than 20minutes a day (10mins in the am morning and 10mins in the evening)

Here is a good, basic skin care routine:

CLEANSE: Regular cleansing is important and when done properly, it serves the following purposes:

It removes dirt, grime and make-up as well as excess oils on the skin's surface and pores. It also aids the cell renewal process.

Use water-soluble creams or gels with tepid water. If you have oily or combination skin, use soap-free bars and cleansers that are pH-balanced.

TONE: Facial toners finish of the cleansing process, they help in removing any excess product or dirt that may have been left after the cleansing process. They also improve the skin'feel of an oily skin when applied after cleansing.

If you have dry skin use alcohol-free facial toner. Or stop using a toner altogether. Your skin will start to improve. If you must use a toner, try rosewater.

MOISTURISE: Use moisturizers that are water-based and if you have frequent outbreaks of pimples and blackheads. Try a light, oil-free moisturizer.

The Steps:

1. Cleanse morning & night with a cream cleanser to remove makeup and surface dirt. Use a soft cloth, tissues and lots of water to remove it.

2. Steam your face by applying a soft cloth, soaked in hot water and run out slightly. This helps to release impurities and open the pores.

3. For a deeper clean use and exfoliator or foaming cleanser.

4. Finish of with a toner or astringent depending on your skin type and what you prefer. Preferably a non-alcoholic toner (especially for dry skin types as it can dry the skin more).

5. Moisturize, complete your cleansing regimen by applying eye cream to the delicate areas around the eyes. Apply the lotion to your neck, throat and face. Moisturizer's are important no matter what your skin type.

Although a good routine will help in retaining beautiful skin, remember that combined with plenty of water, exercise and healthy diet is the true key to successful skin.
