Virtually any Windows based programs write something to the system registry during installation and that information is stored in a few sections of the registry. Quite often poorly written uninstallers don't remove all entries completely and leave a lot of staff behind, thus clogging the registry. This leads to Windows slowness and instability as well an increased number of installed programs in control panel even though they've been "uninstalled".
When the registry becomes large in size, the computer's performance can decrease and cause it to become unstable. Some computer users will spend a lot of time and effort going through the registry and editing it manually. Not only can this be a daunting task, it is also a risky one.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that manually deleted registry keys actually only marked as deleted and as a result, the size of the registry keeps growing. The only way to really remove the entry is to copy registry to text file, search for invalid entries, delete them and import it back.
Microsoft developed special tool called RegClean (regclean.exe) but it does not come pre-installed with Windows and you have to find it and download from Microsoft's website. This utility would search for errors, fixes them and creates a file with all completed corrections. If you double click on that file it would restore all the changes it made.
I have to mention that Microsoft's tool is not the best one out there and far from being user friendly as there is no interface to see the logs and backup files. You have to know exactly what you are doing with registry otherwise you risk damaging it. If registry clogging became a real problem for you I would recommend searching for something more powerful and feature reach that you can also try for free.
One of the tools I found that has a very good rating and allowing free trial is RegCure form Pareto Logic. Nicest feature of RegCure is that it can be set to manual mode for advanced PC users where you have full control of the program or you can set it to go fully automatic scheduled registry cleaning. Aside from having user friendly interface it has powerful sets of features that perform deep scan of the registry and fixes more problems that its closest competitors.
I would strongly recommend reading RegCure
Registry Cleaner Review to familiarize yourself with the program and to download trial version.
