Your computer is basically a collection of external hardware components working in concert in order to allow you to conduct different processes and operations. The mechanism that allows your operating system (Windows) to run all these different hardware devices together are device drivers.

Drivers are basically small pieces of software that enable Windows to communicate with your external hardware equipment. This means that there are drivers for your mouse, keyboard, monitor, video card, sound card, digital camera, scanner, printer, and more.

Your printer is one such hardware device that definitely needs a proper driver. Many printers these days are plug and play, meaning that you can use a plain vanilla Windows driver in order to start using it right away. However, if your printer came with special features they might not be available or usable unless you install the driver from the manufacturer.

Many hardware devices come packaged with driver CDs that also have some software programs on them as well. However, many hardware companies update their drivers continually to work out bugs and improve performance. This means that by the time the driver CD gets to your house when you buy your printer, it's already out of date.

The only way to really distribute driver updates to the public is through the internet. This means that finding and updating your printer drivers can be somewhat confusing, especially for someone who is not that computer savvy. We suggest trying out a driver update software tool to help you get your driver updates automatically.
