Marketing Jobs in the Midlands, England
By: MarkeD | Posted: 30th June 2009
For many of us who are considering a job in marketing, London is the first place to look when researching possible opportunities and companies to approach. However, the truth of the matter is that marketing positions are increasing in availability and numbers further a-field from urban centres - and there are still plenty of openings even during this time of economic uncertainty. Let's have a look at where we might find marketing jobs in the Midlands.
Retail and Services
It's is probably no surprise to you that the West Midlands is home to Birmingham, the most populated area after London in the UK. Consequently, the city is also home to the second biggest retail sector in the country - and is a prime destination for those seeking marketing positions in the retail sector. Similarly, Birmingham is also famed for its service sector, which accounts for around 80 percent of economic output. It is no surprise, then, that the city draws prospective marketers from all over.
Digital and Computing Warwick
Although many of the bigger IT companies have reported the need for job cuts, public sector IT and marketing areas are said to be on the increase. The most notable of big IT institutions in the area will no doubt be computer hardware and software manufacturer, IBM, based in Warwick in the centre of the region. The digital marketing industry is said to be growing currently, and there are currently positions available in such smaller towns and cities as Coventry, Rugby and Leicester.
Motoring
Alongside the growing digital sector, Coventry is also home to a well established motoring industry, in which marketing is developing in new and interesting ways due to the changing economy, i.e. moving more online. Currently, there are three major car manufacturers based in the city: Jaguar still have their headquarters there (despite the increasing amount of manufacture moving to India), Volvo have their UK headquarters there, and so do Peugeot.
Entertainment and recreation
The coast of the East Midlands, namely Skegness and Lincolnshire are home to many holiday resorts such as Butlins, whilst New Ollerton in Nottinghamshire is also home to Centre Parcs UK. Consequently, those with an interest in marketing with a tourism bent may well be inclined to venture east. Additionally, on the west, Birmingham is home to a thriving arts and media scene.
