Debt consolidation – 6 tips before you begin

1. Don't be in a hurry to choose your debt consolidating company. Make sure you are choosing one which is reputed and can be trusted. Check whether the company is authorized and whether it has a license. Also do some research on whether it is recognized by different organizations. Be on the lookout for frauds!

2. Look around for different debt consolidation companies, and compare their services. This way you can choose the most competitive and best one in the market.

3. When opting for debt consolidation, choose secured debt consolidation. In this manner, you can get lower interest rates and a longer time over which you can repay. Otherwise you can also go for "collateral" loans which give the lending company a security ensuring that the person will meet repayment deadlines.

4. DO NOT SIGN until and unless you have reviewed the terms and conditions of the service. Get your lawyer to look over the agreement so that you don't miss any legal jargon inserted. Sometimes companies have hidden clauses in the document which could have a great impact on your repayment plan. It's better to be safe than sorry!

5. Think about the costs involved in debt consolidation. Make sure the company isn't over charging you with hidden costs and penalties. This is a reason why you need to make sure you are choosing a trusted and reputed company. After all, you don't want to end up in more debt at the end of the day!

6. Most importantly, plan yourself out! Monitor your disposable income and your expenses. Sit down and lay out a budget, ensuring that you have some savings at the end of the day, even after you have paid your monthly repayment amount. This is NOT extra cash for you to pamper yourself it. Keep this aside to apply against upcoming repayments!
