Chiemsee (its an area in Germany)

By: Joe The Blogger | Posted: 15th June 2009

Chiemsee is a freshwater lake in Bavaria, Germany, between Rosenheim, Germany, and Salzburg, Austria. It is sometimes called the Bavarian Sea. The streams Tiroler Achen and Prien flow into the lake ; the river Alz, out of it.

This area, with its colours and lighting, almost seems too perfect. It actually electrified painters and poets, royalty and religious women and men. And who could blame them? Anyone that falls in love with this corner of the earth is in fantastic company : The writers Ludwig Ganghofer and Ludwig Thoma, a complete host of painters and the dads of the German constitution all lived here at some time. Long before any of them, the Celts and Romans also settled by the Lake, which was teeming with fish.

Modelled on Versailles, this palace was built as a 'Temple of Fame' for King Louis XIV of France, whom the Bavarian sovereign fervently admired. The region around the Chiemsee is Chiemgau and is a famous recreation area.

The Chiemsee is under the protection of the world Ramsar Convention, which was founded to preserve ecologically critical wetlands.

Since 1954 the mudflats in the delta formed where the Tiroler Ache flows into the lake have been a protected retreat for plenty of endangered animals of waterfowl and wader.
