Yurts - the great grandfather of portable buildings
It would be foolish for us to think that the modern civilisation is the trailblazer in the design of portable buildings. Although we can stake claim to being the pioneers in the drab, cardboard box like structures that were propagated in the name of utility in the early years of the development of these portable buildings. Since long, long ago (circa ever since mankind remembers), the nomadic tribes of Central Asia have been using residential structures known as yurts. These are designed as circular huts and are covered with felt or other fabrics which are beautifully decorated. These yurts are a common site all through the steppes in Central Asia and are a common motif which has been used on the Kazakh coat of arms and the Kyrgyz flag. Portable buildings have become very popular since the World Wars as they solved the problem of housing for the burgeoning population. The baby boomers of the 1950's and 1960's also contributed to this trend as more and more buildings were required for classrooms and other facilities for the children. Today, these portable buildings are a common site being used as guard shacks, rural offices, on-site changing rooms, etc. The most common use of these buildings is however as temporary buildings at construction sites.
