Runtime Error – What to Do When It Occurs
By: sturat | Posted: 08th June 2009
A runtime error is a common error that appears on your computer when a problem occurs during the regular operation; it usually appears in a message box that consists of the pertinent code and all the necessary definitions. Although the average user will not know what the problem is really about, he can definitely notice a slowdown in the computer operation and functions prior to any appearance of the error message.
Once the error message appears and closes, the application that encounters the runtime error will terminate or freeze, asking you to either restart it or close it completely. Depending on the program that has the problem, some applications might cause the system to restart. Why does that happen though?
There is a variety of reasons for which a runtime error might happen; for instance, there could be some issue with software or a currently running application. There could also be conflicts between the Terminate and Stay resident program, or malware and spyware that managed to enter the system without you noticing it. If your computer freezes you can use the Task manager to locate the problem and end the task easily, without losing any valuable data. Once the regular computer operation is restored, you can save your files or texts and then restart your computer to be safe.
In the case you get an error message too often, this means that the particular software has some problems. You can visit the mother company and check if there are any available updates or fixes for the problem; if it is not known you can contact the support and inform them on the problem that slows down your computer operation.
If the software comes in a CD and you have personally installed it, you can try to uninstall and re-install it again. Sometimes a problem during the initial installation can cause these issues, or there is some bug that will disappear once you re-install or even repair your software. Installing patches and updates can also help, especially if you have downloaded the program from the company's website. Check the help files and if you don't find the cause of the runtime error contact the company.
