Learn to Play Guitar Tabs Quickly - It Will Reduce Your Learning Curve by Years

If you are learning to play the guitar, one tip I would give immediately is to stop whatever it is you are doing and take the time to learn to read guitar tabs as soon as possible.
I have been playing the guitar for over 25 years and I am amazed to say that I have overlooked guitar tablature for 24 of those years. As an alternative, I have become really quite competent at playing by sight and ear, which is great, but it has taken a long, long time to get here and now I know what else is about these days, I would not recommend learning purely in this way.
Guitar tablature is an excellent way to move your guitar playing to new areas very quickly. It is so widely available and much of the material is free, so it is worth learning to read quickly using a trusted method so you can take advantage of all the free online guitar tabs. It is really exciting to be able to go through the following steps on a regular basis:
- Learn how to read guitar tabs
- Hear a song that you like
- Search for the guitar tabs
- Have the song in your mind
- Play along with the tabs
- Instantly recognise what you are doing
If I could learn guitar all over again, I would have saved myself years the second time around by deciding to learn to read guitar tabs quickly. As soon as I knew the very basics of what a guitar was, I would get stuck into tabs.
I used to play cds repeatedly, trying to advance moment by moment through songs and learn them that way. Don't get me wrong, it was very satisfying to finish a song and have it sounding great, but looking back, the reward probably did not outweigh the time and effort needed to achieve the result.
Guitar tablature takes all the studying away from the song itself. Someone else has gone to the trouble of extracting all the guitar chords or solos for you. All you have to do is learn to read guitar tabs quickly and you will soon be recognising songs that you love, coming from your own guitar.
