Public Ghost Hunts versus Paranormal Investigations

Ghost Hunts have become increasingly popular with the public. Many ghost hunts used to be carried out by small groups of investigators who would label the ghost hunt as a paranormal investigation and be very concise and particular about recording their findngs. These would be small groups of investigators and we would normally only know about it through the footage of any anomaly captured.

However, ghost hunts are now accessible to members of the public who can participate in this fascinating subject via the public ghost hunting companies that have set up in order to visit some of the grandest locations in the UK. However, the difficulty is how to market this type of service. Ghost hunting companies want their guests to feel as if they are participating in a real paranormal investigtion yet it cannot possibly have the same controls as that of an intense investigation by those equipped and knowledgeable enough to ensure that all the controls for experiments are in place.

The difficulty on public ghost hunts is that it is difficult to know who the guests are that have booked a place on the event and how they will behave on the event. As a first time ghost hunter their reactions may have a detrimental effect on any controls put in place. Guests may also be disruptive and tarnish evidence. They may not enjoy the event and their boredom and fatigue can have a huge detrimental effect on vigils and seances.

I truly believe that the way forward for any ghost hunting company is to describe what they do as purely for entertainment purposes but to ensure that the guidelines and structure of the event allow for as much controlled investigation as possible. This way the guests have more flexibility in the event to react in the most natural way possible and everyone attending the ghost hunt is clear about the intentions. To advertise as a pure paranormal investigation is setting a ghost hunting company up for disaster as it is really difficult to see how it possibly can be. Paranormal events sound serious and investigative and when carried out by serious investigators I would imagine that is exactly what it means. However, I think the term "ghost hunt" is more linked to entertainment than anything more serious and that is where it should stay.

A ghost hunt event is purely as it sounds. It is an event which incorporates ghost hunting in the most manageable way possible. A paranormal investigation actually does investigate in a scientific and controlled way in order to collate evidence safely and be able to put it up for scrutiny.
