International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) is a global organization that develop and publish set of international standards to improve efficiency of organizations, economies, countries and their trade relations. ISO International Standards ensure that products and services are safe, reliable and of good quality. For business, they are strategic tools that reduce costs by minimizing waste and errors and increasing productivity. They help companies to access new markets, level the playing field for developing countries and facilitate free and fair global trade. .ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001, and OHSAS 18001 are horizontal standards and can be applied to organisations in various sectors and industries.

ISO doesn’t issue certification or conformity assessment and ISO Certification is done by ISO Certification Companies or ISO Registration Companies also called as ISO Certification Bodies. Organizations will need to contact an external certification body for ISO Certification. Organizations and companies willing to get ISO certified to ISO’s management system standards (for example ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 or ISO 50001, ISO 26000, ISO 22000, ISO 27001, ISO 20000) although certification is not a requirement. The best reason for wanting to implement these standards is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of company operations.  When a company make decision to go for ISO certification, there can be multiple reasons and some of the many reasons for ISO certification may be; be a contractual or regulatory requirement, be necessary to meet customer preferences and prequalification need, fall within the context of a risk management programme, and help motivate staff by setting a clear goal for the development of its management system.

ISO Certification by ISO Certification Companies is independent assessment of client ISO Management System and its ability to meet customer requirements, legal requirement and overall ISO management system requirements, guidelines, specifications. ISO Certification is critical decision to be taken by ISO Certification committee which engages totally impartial and competent ISO Certification auditors who are not directly engaged into any audit activity. ISO Certification Committee reviews each ISO Certification Audit report independently with out any influence from any third party from within the ISO Certification Company or outside client. Once ISO Certification committee review the stage 1, stage 2 or surveillance ISO Audit reports and once are satisfied with the quality of sampling, evaluation of compliance and identification of ISO Certification Audit team findings, they decide to endorse the decision of ISO Certification audit team leader for issue of ISO Certificate.  ISO Certificate issued is based on the findings of the ISO Certification Audit team audit trial and sampling on the dates of audit and upon their satisfaction that on the date of audit the ISO Management System was in compliance with ISO requirements and thus ISO Certification can be granted.

ISO Certification Companies are for-profit organization and have well structured system for providing ISO Certification services to their clients based on the commercial agreement and scope of ISO certification.   Clients of ISO Certification Companies are obligated to respect the guidelines for use of logos provided by ISO Certification companies at the time of issuance of ISO Certificate. ISO Certificate from accredited ISO Certification Company carry usually two logos; logo of ISO certification body (ISO Registrar) and logo of ISO Accreditation company.  Since the logos are intellectual property of ISO Certification company and ISO Accreditation company so clients are monitored apart for their compliance to the ISO Certification related management system standard but also for their proper and ethical use of ISO Certification Company and ISO accreditation company logos.

It’s usually quoted in management “Any thing which get measured, get done”; ISO Certification is the process for measuring the level of compliance of the client. Over the period when ISO Certified organization follows ISO management system standard, are infact improving their level of compliance against global best practices. Growth is outcome of any company’s ability to optimize its resources and to sustain its management systems rather enhance its management systems.
