A Brief Overview of the Rii Mini Wireless Keyboard

By: darylmurphy | Posted: 23rd June 2011

The Rii Mini Keyboard is just what it says on the box, a mini keyboard. When I say mini keyboard, I am really referring to , as it's not the same size as a regular keyboard. Nearly all typical PC keyboards are around 18 inches by 2 inches by 8 inches, however this unit is a mere 5.9 inches by 2.3 inches by 0.5 inches and weighs in at merely 3.2 ounces. It's light and small, which makes it ideal for people on the move since it's so handy to bring with you. Since it's little, the device is handheld, but it provides for enjoyably easy typing.

This device is great for using with your laptop computer or desktop PC, and also your PS3 or any other gaming system that supports this unit. Numerous devices are wireless these days, so the Bluetooth wireless USB receiver on this mini keyboard makes connecting it to your electronics easy. This mini keyboard has the familiar QWERTY layout, plus the convenience of a touchpad like those we know from laptops. A poorly lit area won't be a problem since this unit has 26 LED lights built into it. The Rii uses two lithium ion batteries, which are included with the product and are also rechargeable.

On Amazon, this mini keyboard has acquired numerous reviews, most of them giving this product 4 and 5 stars. There are likewise some votes for 1, 2 and 3 stars, which shows that it may not be as good as it first appears. One user noted that the Rii connected to his Ubuntu system without any issues and worked fairly well within a 30ft range, but any further than that and it stopped working right. But then, a range of 30 ft is fairly good. Both playlist and volume button controls are present on this device, which is fantastic if the intended use is multimedia in character. Buttons that aren't frequently used are on this keyboard, which is good as they are often needed so it would be an inconvenience if they weren't there.

Of Course, this review would be incomplete if it did not bring up the downsides. The touchpad functions quite well; however, it can be a bit of a pain as it isn't always precise, unlike most regular laptop touchpads. Besides, taps are not always detected by the touchpad - but this can be avoided by rather using the left and right mouse buttons. Also bear in mind that whilst it does have the QWERTY layout, the keys are placed in a grid with straight lines vertically and horizontally, whereas regular keyboards have a bit of an offset in the vertical grids. It's not a real hassle, though; you'll get used to it rather quickly.

If you are shopping for a mini keyboard with a touch pad, you don't have to look further than the Rii Wireless Keyboard. There are a few of little minuses but the upsides outweigh them, particularly at such a reasonable price.
