The Secret

"Fragments of a great secret have been found in the oral tradition, in literature, in religion and in philosophies throughout the centuries" extols the publicity material for the movie "The Secret" which launched in March 2006. The producer of the film, Australian Rhonda Byrne has now adapted the film and written a book based on the movie. It took her only four weeks to write the book and it contains material not featured in the screen version.

What then is this "Secret" that purportedly so dramatically changed the lives of myriad people over the centuries? "The secret' is based on the law of attraction. Thoughts are things and what you think about you attract to you." This is not new, Napoleon Hill wrote about the same thing in "Think and Grow Rich". In previews to the film that comprise a series of intriguing clues, Byrne suggests Charles F. Haanel "uncovered the secret' and thus brought it to the attention of modern day man. Certainly Hill was familiar with Haanel's "Master Key System" and attributed much of his success to this formula. He wrote to Haanel saying, "I ought to inform you that my present success…is due largely to the principles laid down in the Master Key System."

According to producer and author Byrne, knowledge of the secret provides the key to good health, unlimited wealth an ability to overcome obstacles and apparently achieve the seemingly impossible. It does this by embracing and teaching "the law of attraction." This law suggests that our feelings and actions somehow have the power to effect the real happenings of the world at all levels from the macrocosm to the microcosm. In other words the thinking of the majority is responsible for world events such as the War in Iraq and you own thought patterns result in whether or not you are wealthy.

To make its case the book and the film that preceded it introduces specific people from the past that have been teachers of this law. They are called "The Secret Teachers". The instructors from the past make-up an impressive list ranging from Aristotle to Beethoven to Isaac Newton; it is also interesting that a significant grouping comprise the individuals Napoleon Hill interviewed on behalf of Andrew Carnegie in order to write his bestseller "Think and Grow Rich". Such names include Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Henry Ford.

A group of today's "Secret teachers" give comment to the book; they include amongst others John Gray, Joe Vitale, Jack Canfield, the Reverend Michael Beckwith, Hale Dwoskin, Denis Waitley and Neale Donald Walsch.

Dr Joe Vitale says: "This is really fun. It's like having the Universe as your catalogue. You flip through it and say, ‘I'd like to have this experience and I'd like to have that product and I'd like to have a person like that. It's your placing your order with the Universe. It's really that easy."

Journalist Jeffrey Ressner writing in Time Magazine expresses concern about using ancient wisdom to acquire material goods. He is troubled by the account of "a young kid who wants a red BMX bicycle cutting out a picture in a catalog, concentrating real hard, and is rewarded by the spiffy two-wheeler". What's wrong with that? If we can acquire material items we can acquire other things of apparently greater significance, can't we? However, it's a mistake to think that if you want these things you can lie back and do nothing. No, you do have to take action to propel yourself towards the goal you seek.
Rhonda Byrne made a film and wrote a book. Her work has been featured on "Larry King Live" as well as the "Oprah Winfrey Show". As a result of the "Secret" she has become successful. If she can successful by writing a book like this so can you.But maybe books are not your thing, so instead create something you really want. Isn't that what "The Secret" is all about?
