Fellowes Powershred PS-77CS Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

By: Jeff McRitchie | Posted: 08th January 2010

The Fellowes Powershred PS 77CS is a desk side shredder that offers a nice security level and capacity in a small, sleek package. Here we offer a closer look at some of the strengths and weaknesses of the Powershred PS-77CS.

  1. The PS 77CS is without a doubt one of the more capable desk side shredders we have seen. The motor kick out at eleven feet per minute, and the machine states a shredding capacity of 12 sheets per pass. It met that standard without much problem in our testing, but we do have to note here that the results you experience may vary a little bit according to such factors as the weight of the paper you are shredding, and the age and strength of your power supply.

  2. The PS 77CS makes shredding just a little bit easier by accepting staples, paper clips, and credit cards. More impressively, you can shred compact discs (CDs and DVDs) with the PS 77CS. That is a very handy feature in the digital age, and one that we were pleasantly surprised to see in a small desk side shredder. The PS 77CS's cutters are made of solid steel, and Fellowes offers you a 5 year warranty upon purchase.

  3. If you have read any of our shredder reviews, you know that we care a great deal about the type of security that a given shredder offers. The PS 77CS shines in this regard as well, offering you a shredder Security Level of 3, which means that as far as the federal government is concerned, you are destroying your confidential documents to a point where any potential identity thieves could not glean any information from them. The laws enacted in 2005 to help prevent such crimes states that documents must be shredder at a (cross cut) security level of 3 or above in order to keep you safe from possible fines or litigation.

  4. Again, if you are familiar with our reviews, you know that we take safety very seriously as well. We are happy to report that the Powershred PS 77CS does too, and comes equipped with one of the best safety features in the shredder world, Fellowes unique (and in fact patented) Safe Sense system. This remarkable system uses special sensors near the feed opening that detect body heat and cut power to the motor if a hand or some fingers get too close. This is a feature we like for many reasons, and for many applications, but feel that it is an especially nice touch if the Powershred PS 77CS is being used where there are any children or household pets nearby.

  1. Not a weakness so much as a limitation, it is just important to be aware that the Powershred PS 77CS is a machine that is designed for relatively light use. There are larger, higher volume shredders out there that are built for continuous use. However, the Powershred PS 77CS is not one of them. This machine is designed to run for 10 or 12 minutes continuously before it will require about 20 minutes of downtime to prevent overheating of the motor.

  2. The 9-inch feed opening is perfect for the vast majority of paper sizes. Just be aware that if you are going to want the ability to shred larger custom sheets on a regular basis, you might want to find a shredder that has a larger feed.
